Mat Horne Audio Describes for Sky Movies17th Dec 2009
A Muppet Christmas Carol
There’s nothing quite like settling down to a movie at Christmas. Whether it’s an all time favourite or a film you watch every year to bring festive cheer, but if you are blind or partially sighted, there is an essential tool which helps to transform this experience.
Audio Description or AD is additional commentary that describes on-screen action, body language and facial expressions between programme dialogue. It is specifically produced for each programme, allowing people who have difficulties seeing to hear what they can not see, vastly improving the experience. This year actor and comedian Mat Horne has worked with Sky Movies HD to provide the AD for A Muppets Christmas Carol, which will broadcast on Christmas Day.
Mat Horne comments: “I can’t imagine what it’s like to watch something and only have part of the story. Working with Sky to voice the audio description on A Muppets Christmas Carol was great fun and something I hope people enjoy.”
A Muppets Christmas Carol topped a recent Sky Movies poll in which almost 45,000 people voted for their favourite festive films of all time. Home Alone and Fred Claus came second and third respectively, with all three films scheduled into prime-time slots on Christmas and Boxing Day. The rest of the top 20 films are scheduled across the two days on Sky Movies Christmas Channel – all available to watch in high definition on Sky Movies Christmas Channel HD.
Sky was the first UK TV broadcaster to launch an audio-description service in November 1999 and currently provides AD on all Ofcom regulated channels* and exceeds the requirement set of 10%. Over the Christmas period this will be increased to 30% across Sky1 and Sky Movies. Over the past year Sky has provided 34,000 hours of audio described content and continues to support the RNIB’s call for more AD output, working closely with them to improve accessibility for the blind and visually impaired.
